Step Onto the Field

BECOME A SOCCER REF

Want to level up your soccer game and have fun at the same time? Becoming a referee is your chance to do just that! You’ll learn all the rules, what counts as a foul, how offside works, what those hand signals mean, and more. Plus, you’ll help make sure every game is fair, safe, and a good time for everyone on the field.

Copper Mountain Soccer® is looking for players, parents, and coaches 13 and older to get certified and start refereeing in our recreational leagues. Training only happens once a year to keep you up-to-date, and yes – you get paid for it!

If you’re interested in competitive games, UYSA even helps cover the certification cost. Whether you want extra cash, a deeper understanding of soccer, or just a way to give back to your community, refereeing is a fun way to get in on the action.

Sign up for one of our upcoming referee training clinics being held in-person on February 21, 28, March 7, and 14 (you only need to attend one and can come even if you don’t pre-register).

Pay structure

HOW REFS ARE PAID

Refs are paid for games based on this structure:

  • 3rd-6th grade games – $15/game
  • Middle school games – $20/game
  • If you end up being the only referee in a two-referee game (5th-Middle School), you will get another 50% ($22.50 or $30, respectively).

Payments are made via a bank account. You will need to complete a W-9 form and enter banking information in your Demosphere account after you register. Locate the “Payment Info” section to update. Payments are sent out about 2-3 weeks after the season is over, in one lump sum.

You will be required to record the score on the spreadsheet each week to receive credit for pay. Be sure to keep track of the coach’s name, score, and record results on the same day of the game.

Referee FAQs

Anyone age 13 or older during the current year can referee. If you’re not 13 yet, you may still register—you just need to choose games that fall after your 13th birthday.

Yes. All referees must complete CMS Referee Certification, which is valid for 1 year. It will need to be renewed each year you intend to ref.

  • If you are state-certified (USSF), you do not need CMS certification.

  • If you certified with iRef in Spring 2025, you don’t need to re-certify until next spring.

After certification:

  1. Create a new Demosphere account (do not use an existing household).

  2. Register under CMRS Referee Registration – 2025/2026.

  3. Make sure your email is correct—this is how schedules and updates are sent.

  4. You must see “Registration Order Complete!” to be in the system.

  • 3rd–6th grade games: $15 per game

  • Middle School games: $20 per game

  • If you ref a 2-ref game alone: 50% extra ($22.50 or $30)

  • You must also complete a W-9 and enter banking info in Demosphere or provide your Venmo information.
