Recreation Head Coach

POSITION SUMMARY

  • The Recreation Soccer Coach plays a key role in providing a positive, fun, and engaging soccer experience for youth players of all abilities. Coaches focus on developing fundamental skills, encouraging teamwork, promoting good sportsmanship, and fostering a lifelong love of the game. Practices are age-appropriate and emphasize participation, learning, and enjoyment over competitive results.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Practice & Game Management
    Plan and lead at least one weekly practice (30–60 minutes depending on age group) and attend all scheduled recreation games, creating an environment that is safe, positive, and supportive for players.

  • Player Development
    Introduce and reinforce basic soccer fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, receiving, and teamwork. Promote skill development at each practice and game without emphasizing competition or results.

  • Positive Experience & Sportsmanship
    Encourage all participants to enjoy their experience, treat teammates and opponents with respect, and demonstrate good sportsmanship. Create a welcoming environment where players feel confident to learn and grow.

  • Safety & Compliance
    Complete the required concussion awareness and background check requirements before coaching. Ensure the safety of all players by maintaining a supervised, organised setting during practices and games.

  • Communication
    Communicate scheduling and game/practice information clearly to players and parents. Keep families informed of any changes to times or locations.

  • Attend League Meetings & Training
    Attend pre-season coaches meetings and any league-provided training to receive resources, equipment, and guidance for coaching success.

  • Support League Goals
    Support the goals and values of your recreational soccer program by contributing to a positive community culture that fosters fun, growth, and inclusivity.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Passion for Youth Development — Enthusiastic about working with young players and contributing to a fun and educational soccer experience.

  • Basic Soccer Knowledge — A general understanding of soccer fundamentals and an interest in teaching skills to beginners. 

  • Communication Skills — Ability to communicate clearly with players, parents, and league staff.

  • Safety Training Requirements — Completion of required concussion awareness training and any league-mandated background check prior to coaching.

  • Volunteer Spirit — Recreation coaches are often volunteers (parents, community members) who provide time and energy to help youth succeed.

  • Other Requirements
    • Reliable transportation to practices and games. 

    • A positive attitude and commitment to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment for all players.

SCHEDULE

  • Weekly practices (typically one session + games on scheduled weekends).

  • Attendance at the pre-season coaches meeting or orientation.

  • Occasional team communication or planning outside of field time.
