Session 4 Overview

Team Shape & Support

  • 6v2 or 7v2
    • 10 minutes
  • Backwards Goals
    • 15 minutes
  • 6v3 + GK
    • 15 minutes
  • Scrimmage
    • 18 minutes

Position Play 6v2

Size: 20×30 yds

Offense–

  • Try to move to create angles and open passing lanes to receive the ball
  • Can we play away from pressure to get behind the defensive blob?
  • Score by connecting 5 consecutive passes. If defense touches the ball then offense starts over with their count.
  • If defense wins the ball, offense can try to win it back, in which case the offensive players should close the space. If they win the ball back, offensive players should immediately back pedal to create space and continue play.

Defense– (switch blob every 2 minutes)

  • 2 defenders are a “blob” holding opposite ends of the same pinnie. Pressure the ball to win it back.
  • If they win possession they should drop the pinnie, and try to dribble or pass to each other to stop the ball on the sideline for a point.
  • If offense gets 4 consecutive passes, then the blob can separate. If defense wins the ball and scores, then they reset to a blob and the ball goes back to offense.

Coaching Points

  • Backpedal to create space from teammate on the ball and maintain vision
  • Face space with open hips and always be ready to receive the ball
  • Create triangles and diamonds with teammates to support teammate on the ball
  • Receive with far foot taking first touch towards space (know the next pass before receiving)

3P INTERVENTIONS

Praise: Brilliant — you gave shape and support to your team!

Pose: How do bigger triangles help maintain possession?

Perfect: The ideal: A team in possession forms triangles and diamonds, always offering multiple options of support to their teammate on the ball.

Backwards Goals

Size: 20×30 yds

Set up two 4×6 goals facing away from each other, approximately 15 yards apart.

  • Create two teams
  • Play 4v4 or 5v5
  • Roll the ball out between the goals to begin
  • Teams may score on either goal
  • Start a new ball in the middle after a goal
  • If the ball is turned over, the goal on the opposite side must be attacked, but after crossing the midline, either goal can be scored on

  • Communicate, share what you see

6v3 + GK

Size: 20×30 yds

Setup: Pop ups 5 yds apart

Dribble gates are each 5 yds wide

  • Rotate the 3 defensive players, GK, and switch up offensive positions every 2-3 minutes
  • The defender in the middle of the blob holds the end of a pinnie with the other two defenders
  • Offense (blue) tries to score on either of the two pop ups
  • Defense (red) tries to win possession and dribble through either of the two yellow dribble gates
  • Coach can play the blue, attacking CB if there aren’t 10 players, and there can be one midfielder instead of two

Coaching Points

  • Backpedal to create space from teammate on the ball and maintain vision
  • Face space with open hips and always be ready to receive the ball
  • Create triangles and diamonds with teammates to support teammate on the ball

Scrimmage 5v5

Work on:

  • Throw-ins
  • Building out of the back (use the halfway line as the build-out line)
  • Positional relationships

Coaching Points:

  • Backpedal to create space
  • Create triangles in possession
  • Check in, move to the ball to receive
  • Receive with the far foot
  • Communicate constantly, share what you see

Freeze play occasionally and ask players how many triangles they see, check overall spacing and ask them where they can move to improve their shape and chances of keeping possession
